Hi,

I have an opportunity to get a gold nugget pleco. I've heard and read that they can be a very delicate pleco, can be a fussy eater and can be hard to acclimatise to their new environment.

Has anyone have any experiences/comments they can share to enable me to make up my mind.

Cheers
Robbie

Gold nugget plecos are rather high-maintenence for plecos. They need good-quality water, they have to have wood in their tank, and they are picky eaters. I would pass on these guys, and go for a bn or something hardy like that.

Actually, you're more likely to encounter the large spot gold nugget, which is, once acclimated and feeding (you may have to seciton off a part of your tank and keep only him in it until he starts to feed), a fairly low maintenence fish. They can tolerate a wide range of water quality, and will eat just about anything (meaty foods preferred) once it is weaned in the aquarium. Also, they don't touch wood at all. Instead, they feed by sucking up the substrate and spitting it out, searching for small edible critters and leftovers. Thus, sand is the preferred substrate for the gold nugget tank.

I almost bought one of these guys for $25.00 the other day but hadn't read up on them. Good thing I waited and got 6 ottos instead. They sure are pretty.

Thanks for the reply guys, still haven't made up my mind yet but leaving it in the lfs is winning the contest but only by a small margin.

Cheers
