Can anyone tell me if gold plecs are just an albino version of your common plec, or a defferent sub-species, and if so whats the scientific name??????

The "gold pleco" you speak of is probably just an albino bristlenose, Ancistrus sp. They usually have visible bristles on their snout, hence the name. These striking fish grow to ten or twelve cm, are hardy, and are great algae eaters.

The other fish that *might* be labeled as a gold pleco is the albino form of the common plec. These are usually just called "albino plecos" though, so the first fish is probably the one you're looking for.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

If it's anywhere in the price range of two digits, it's either an albino ancistrus sp. or an albino morph of pterygoplicthys scrophus. goldy scobs (scobinancistrus) are rare, if present at all, in aus., and would catch especially high prices much in part due to it's huge size.

I seen 1 labeled gold pleco today and it looked like a spotted gibbiceps to me. The fish was behind the filter intake so it was hard to ID. Was the fish in question Albino?

What you're thinking of is the L14 sunshine (goldie) pleco.

Crap, I just looked at PlanetCatfish and the Goldie isn't the one I was thinking of. Just like the originator of this topic mentioned, looks more like some sort of albino form of the regular pleco, but alot prettier in my opinion...although when I saw it listed in tha LFS they said it was "Golden" and around $40-$45 which I cannot find.

They sell for anywhere from $AU50-100, for about 2 or 3 inch long. I'm guessing it must be an albino form of a common plec, it's just they sell them as gold plecs in sydney. Just wanted to find out whether they where the same species or not. Thanks for the feed back, it's a bit hard to get much info from the shops in the north side of Sydney.
