The bad news: Today, I brought most of my corys to the LFS. Some of them are going to be sold again, while others are going in display tank. I purchased mostly stragglers in shipments, so I ended up with lots of species that were relatively small in number. The species I gave to the store were B. splendens, C. aeneus, C. arcuatus, C. leucomelas, C. pulcher, C. rabauti, C. schwartzi, and C. trilineatus. I gave my pandas to Marlene McFly. Seventeen corys in total I brought to the LFS.

Now for the good news: I replaced them with a school of six C. sp. aeneus "Gold-Line", also known as the gold-line bronze cory. They have beautiful coloring (they look better than the ones on Planet Catfish), and are very playful. Currently they swimming up, down, across, and around the tank, and it's pretty funny to watch.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I did keep my C. bilineatus (the cory in my avatar) and my C41. They are just too rare and unique to give away. I doubt I'll find more of them, but I'd rather not risk them being purchased by some 10 year old who would put them in his way overstocked 5 gallon.

Ughh... Bad day today.

A horrible bacterial infection is wiping them out. I lost two this morning, and another one is on his way out right now.

The ones who died, their fins disintigrated overnight. The ones that are left appear to have disintigrating fins and/or swelling in the anterior part of their body. It's really bad, but luckly it hasn't spread to any of my other fish.

I am treating the tank with Maracyn-Plus, a powerful antibiotic that I have heard very good reviews and success stories about. I am hoping it works. The really bad-looking fish I'm pretty sure is not going to live much longer, but I am hoping I can save the other three.

These are the first corys I've ever lost from disease, and I don't want to lose any more. It's really sad to see them like this.

Here's a picture I just took of one of the better-looking ones. Notice the swelling and discoloration.

I would need to read the ingredients on the maracyn-plus, but I would add aquarium salt.

These are corys, so salt is out of the question. Salt has not even been provent to prevent/treat/cure any disease, so I wouldn't really want to put it in anyway...

Anyway, the active ingredients in the Maracyn-Plus are Sulfidimidine and Trimethoprin.

And now for even more bad news: I lost three more corys today. I now have only one left, but luckly it looks like he is not infected. Also, the bacteria are currently killing my female betta. She's almost on her way out, so there's not much I can do.

None of the other fish appear to be infected, but I am going to continue the treatment for the full five days just to be sure.

When this is all over, and if that one gold-line cory is still alive, I will definitely get him some more friends.

It looks like one of the gouramis has a slight infection on one of his pelvic fins. Would it be okay to amputate about half of the fin in order to stop it from spreading?

BTW: The betta is almost gone now... I give her about 15 more minutes at the most.

Since the other cory looks pretty much healthy, once the betta dies and if I amputate part of the gourami's fin, all physical signs of the infection will be gone.

I am really looking forward to when this is over...

All of the corys (and the betta) are gone now.

I did end up amputating about half of the gourami's fin, just above the infected part. So far there are no signs of it being infected again. He (well actually it's a female, but it's easier to say "he" doesn't seem to be too affected by the amputation, but now when I approach the tank he hides under the driftwood and glares at me.

I just treated the tank again today, and I'm hoping no more fish get infected. I would hate to lose my C41 and C. bilineatus.

Would you be able to remove the rarer ones into a small seperate tank and keep an eye on them in there? I would complain to the shop as I believe the disease would be from the Corys you bought.

You sure it wasn't Velvet that wiped them out.? It appears gold. I had it in my tank and exspecially the female bettas, it just wipe them out like there is no tomorrow. Also I would complain to the lfs. Perhaps they can replace the fish, or at least the effected ones. But I would QT them from this lfs from now on. Once bitten twice shy.

Well, I can't really flat out complain to the LFS, as it wasn't their fault (I'm the one who was foolish enough to buy the fish the day after they arrived), and I work there. I don't want to get fired...

The manager said I could either get my money back or I can replace them. I will probably replace them, but I'm not sure if I want to get the same kind again or C. similis. The latter species is very rare around here and it might be a while before I can get them. The C. sp. cf. aeneus can be ordered right now.

So far so good with the tank now, however.
