I saw a gorgeous grey spotted pleco today in one of my lfs.
I think it was a L264. I've seen this called a Sultan Pleco and also a Vampire Pleco. I almost bought it, but not knowing the species and of course the lfs didn't know how big it gets, also the price was $50 U.S. dollars

Haha got to watch those tank busters. My wife sucker'd me into getting this long finned plec. I got home and was freaked out because ive never seen it before. There isn't a profile for it here or planet catfish. At that point I was aggrivated. After further investigation I found out it was a long finned bristle nose and gasped in relief. LOL

Yeah, those sultan plecos are nice. I don't know why they were labeled as vampire plecos though, that title belongs to the L007 and/or L029 plec. They are in the same genus as the sultans, but they're so different looking, it's hard to believe that someone could goof so much.

And, there is actually a profile for the fish here. [link=http://fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/leolep.xml]http://fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/leolep.xml" style="COLOR: #808080[/link]

They grow to six inches or so, maybe a little larger. Fifty dollars is a little on the high side, my work has 3-5 inch sultans priced at forty.

Nice fish. Sure wish we could get a variety of plecs around here. About the only thing we ever see is the common plec and the occassional sail fin and that's about it.

The only reason I saw this fish is because an Aquarium Adventure store opened in New York and it's 11,000 sq ft of only fish.

I currently have a snowball, clown, albino, bristlenose dwarf plecos in my 46 with the usual assortment of tetras, rams, etc. Do you think adding this Sultan would be too much for the bottom. I also have "I think" 4 otos in there.

50 dollars is good for a large specimen. On the other hand, I recieved my youngster for around 20 US, and raised it to a good 6" in length.

These guys were about 3" for 50 bucks. They also
had a Mango Pleco, which they had listed as "Magnum"

Nice article coln,

I was about to ask you what was a good price for the Mango, but if they grow to 12 inches I don't think I would put him in my 46gallon that currently has 4 different dwarf plecos.
