I'm pretty sure that these fish (more commonly known as the "butterfly loach" don't eat algae at all. They aren't even a catfish, so the reason they have the word "pleco" in their name is beyond me.

They don't eat algae, but will sometimes dislodge it in order to eat the microoganisms that live inside of it.

That makes many people think that they eat it, which they don't.

I would disagree. The are omnivorous IME, and will clean some algae off the tank surfaces. After an absence of about two weeks, and without any fish losses, my hillstream was still burdened with a full belly when I returned. According to Southeastern Asian icthyologists M. Kottelat and A.J. Whitten, spotties tend to feed mostly on detritus and vegetable matter.

My Hillstream Loach is a very industrious algae eater. In fact, I have only in 6 months seen him eat a food type other than algae once, and that was only a single taste and yuck face.
They are a great algae eater in my opinion, but should always have their diet aided with a meatier food available to them should they like it.
