To me they appear to have rather small spots, that are so close together that they almost make horizontal lines along the body, vertical on the tail...You could always post a picture here and let everyone help you decide if it is a real julli...heidi

My understanding is that with true julii catfish, the spots are distinct and separate from each other, while in the case of trilineatus, the spots (particularly around the head area) join up to form vermiculated markings (a bit like black versions of those polystyrene 'worms' used as packing filler).

I'm sure someone will turn up some pics for you soon and illustrate this

I recall that certain regional specimens of c. trilineatus bear little to no reticulation.

Indeed. The best way to figure out which cory is which is to ask the store where they were shipped from. If they actually know, and give you a straight answer, that will provide your solution. Corydoras julii come from the Brazilian Amazon, I believe, whereas C. trilineatus fish typically come from Peru.

Almost all fish sold as "Corydoras julii" in the hobby are actually C. trilineatus. It is very rare indeed to find true julii, so it is pretty much safe to assume that any julii you see are just trilineatus.
