I heard something about the spines being straight, or curved or something??

It is very difficult to sex a common pleco, though there are some *supposed* ways of doing so. Males are somewhat smaller than females, although that is indeterminable until the fish is fully grown. Also, the chin barbels of males are supposedly more hooked, while females's barbels are smooth.

Size is not a good indication. Often, males can be larger than females and vice versa.
