Hi,

I just got 12 ottos and are divided into to tanks, i had some small algae trouble, so before it got out of hand i got this guys, So far i haven't seen them eat the algae at all, they feed from the flakes i feed the betta in each tank, what can i do to encourage them to eat the stuff?

Feed the betta two Hikari Betta Bites in the morning and two in the evening. These are highly nutritious and mine comes right to me for their pellets. Its not in the tank 2 seconds and gone!

What kind of algae are you talking about? Brown, fuzzy, long threads, hard, soft???

Ahhh - if it is hairy, then they won't eat it. I wish I could help you on that, but I'm battling that myself. I hear Rosy Barbs will eat that stuff, but they get kind of big and probably would ruffle the betta.

The American flag fish and the butterfly goodeid also eat hair algae. You might be able to find some given your location.

Yeah Devon - Otos will eat brown algae.

However, keep in mind that otos still need to be in schools and should be fed an algae wafer several times weekly for complete nutrtion. Most aquariums don't have adequate algae for any algae eater exclusively.

Also, if you've never had them, check your nitrates and make sure you can maintain less than 20ppm with your water changes. They don't do well in high nitrate tanks.
