My local LFS has finally stocked what they claim to be julii(spelling) cories but I am still doubtful. Exactly how do I determine true juliis from imitators. Also these particular specimens shall be going into my as of now sparsely stocked 40 gallon. How many would be plausible for a school in this tank without overstocking. Finally what do you pay regularly for this species. Thanx in advance.

What other fish do you already have in the tank, so we can see the overstocking issue?.

Is this a Julii Corydoras?. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/detail?.dir=8098&.dnm=5a33.jpg&.src=ph

As of now nothing is in the tank but I would like to add the cories later on. As far as the picture I would say that it was a julii but I am not for sure.

From what I understand, the difference between trilineatus (the common imposter) and the julii is that the trilineatus has 3 definite horizontal lines going down its side while the julii does not.

However, even the trilleanus are cool. Just don't pay premium prices for a false julli.

True julii- rare, and they always have a spotted head pattern rather than reticulations. Whenever a store knows that it has actual C. julii, they tend to demand a high price for them. $8-$15 U.S. wouldn't be unusual.

C. trilineatus- very common; often mislabled as C. julii. Whenever a "julii" has reticulations on its head, it is a C. trilineatus. However, some C. trilineatus have spotted heads, which means that not all spotted "julii" are in fact julii. Hope this makes sense. These can normally be had for $3-$7 U.S. apiece.

Both have three distinct lines running down their flanks. Both are very peaceful, and are small for Corydoras. Both look nice enough; so it doesn't matter whether you have true C. julii or not. Since the spots and patterning of the two fish can vary greatly within the species, it really can be difficult for even an expert to identify whether a fish is a C. trilineatus or a C. julii. Most fish sold as "C. julii" are false julii, but they are just as enjoyable as the true ones.

As per the tank stocking issue, we'll need to know what else is in there.

The only inhabitants that will coenside with the cory cats are a couple kuhli loaches, a clown pleco, a small angel, and possibly a couple glass catfish. In this particular aquarium I would like to focus on the bottom feeder aspect.
