Ive got some cories in a 55g with my 2 angel fish and pair of bolivian rams. They have all lived there together for a long time. I havent done anything differently, no recent water change, no temp or food change and today all of my cories are bouncing all over the place, instead of just scavenging along the bottom as usual. Going from top to bottom, chasing eachother and just utilizing the whole tank for play. Is this some kind of pre-breeding activity or does anyone have a similar experience?

Healthy cories will do that every once in a while. You might expect breeding behavior if your cories are an easily-bred species, or if their diet includes a lot of live or frozen foods. Otherwise, they're probably just playing around.

I would say that they are just being corries and have decided a nice game of chase was in order...that or they were beginning to spawn, or (mine do this at times) it's going to have some weird weather change...

I know if it is going to storm a day or so before, because they act even stranger and crazier than they normally do

I wouldn't worry, especially if your water parameters are in good shape...so sit back and get some laughs...they are free for the taking it seems

and if you think the little guys are moving around like crazy you should come join me trying to catch my juvenile/fry metaes out of the 125...there really is just too much room for them to swim for it, and there is no way i could ever hope to move that fast

Just to catch 4 metae juvenile fry took me about an hour and I was soaked when I was through...sometimes smaller tanks do have an advantage

Oh and want to see them go wickedly insanedo a good deep gravel vac, with 30% water change and feed them some blood worms afterwards, then sit back (on the floor, so you don't hurt yourself falling out of the chair) and enjoy

Watch for your Corys performing what appears to be 'glass cleaning', particularly with their bellies and barbels.

If they seem to be doing this, and furthermore, the majority of participants appear to be the smaller, slimmer members of the shoal, then you could be looking at pre-spawning preparatory behaviour. This is what my Pandas did before their first spawning way back in May 2003. They swam up and down the glass incessantly, interspersing this behaviour with truly mad-looking powerhead bubble surfing, back in April 2003. Lo and behold, in May 2003, they started spawning.

If your Corys are in clean, fairly spacious surroundings with lots of interesting bits of aquarium furniture to explore (e.g., plant thickets, bits of bogwood with holes in and other nooks and crannies), and they receive regular live foods, then chances are you'll be witnessing the patter of tiny fins in the not too distant future. Time to fire up a few infusoria cultures I think!

Note, once your Corys become veteran spawners, they modify their behaviour somewhat, and their chasing tends to be more confined to the lower layers of the water, although my Pandas will still adopt acrobatic T positions in midwater when spawning, sometimes so energetically that they somersault during the T position!
