Hey all,
I just picked up this new guy today, he is def. a catfish, but he was labelled and sold to the LFS as "Wotroi Cory" and the guy at the LFS said half of the order was definetly cory cats, the other half were these guys.
Can you ID him for him and give me any info you know?
Thanks heres some pics

Woah, he's got a nice set of whiskers on him! Very cute... but assuming he's like cories (sorry, can't help ID him, but cories have barbels, not whiskers), he needs buddies. They're schooling fish. Cool lil guy, though! Very interesting...

~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~

Brachyrhamdia imitator, the false melanistus cory.

EDIT: I've said it once, and I'll say it again--FP needs spell check. That or I need to learn to spell.

Awesome find, Pete.

These "false corys" are actually Pimelodids that evolved to mimic corys for protection in numbers, and in the wild they are almost always found schooling with the species they imitate (there are several species of cory-mimicking pims, I believe).

Despite their appearance, these guys are not cory-like in bahavior. Those long barbels are there for a reason - these fish are predators. But you don't have to worry, because even when full-grown (which isn't very large; a few inches at most), they pose little threat to anything bigger than a neon tetra.

Are you sure it's a pim? That evenly raised adipose fin looks nothing like any pimeloid I've ever seen. I remember some time ago on the PC boards a poster attached an image of a false cory that looked, marking for marking, identical to an adolphi cory. Evolution is amazing, isn't it?

yes that false cory that looked like an adolfoi is also under the same family of Heptapteridae, species name: Brachyrhamdia rambarrani. This species has coloration almost identical to the adolfoi cory, except its body has a much more "smooth" appearance, rather than the rough, edges as seen by scutes on corydoras species.

There are several Brachyrhamdia species available. Three I have listed in my Kobayagawa book are B. imitator, B. rambarrani and B. meesi. Of the three, B. rambarrani is amazing: it looks like a Bandit Cory with long barbels!

B. meesi looks a bit like Corydoras hastatus. I'll check the info on Planet Catfish and see what they're classified under these days, only back in the 80s they were listed as Pims.

Apparently these fishes max out at around 3 to 3½ inches according to Planet Catfish.

I've been waiting for someone to alight upon these little gems for some time. I was thinking of writing an article about them, but seems I've been pre-empted a bit now

EDIT : apparently they're now in the Heptapteridae. Along with Goeldiella eques and the Pimelodella species, all former Pims.

A nice looking catfish no matter what it is and a real find. I would love to find some in this area.

Wow, thanks for all the info guys!
I have already found that my new little friend loves Bloodworms!
He is a very, very fast little swimmer, and he loves all his new cory friends!
Which particular Cory does he look like? And could someone post a picture of that cory so I can be on the lookout for them? I would like to get a few for him to school with, and of course I will be on the lookout for more of his kind!
I paid 5.99 for him, I assume hes worth more than that?
How long will this little dude live? Hes quite young I assume, measuring just under an Inch in length now- he makes my aggassizi corys look huge in comparison! Which, are the corys he has chosen to bond with, they do sort of look alike. He also schools with my Yoyo Loaches, very cute!
Thanks for all the help guys!

Technically, he is evolved to mimic C. melanistius, but any similarly patterned cory will work just as well (C. leucomelas, C. aggasizi, C. schwartzi, etc...).

Here's a picture of C. melanistius:

Well I would certainly be willing to pay more than $5.99 for these cats.

Like most catfish, expect him to be relatively long-lived. A cat like him would probably be able to live 10 years easily, and possibly much longer.
