OK the guy at the lfs swears these are metae, and I know the pictures aren't the best, but I'll add what I saw as the differences to help, ready books?

On the casual look, it looks like a metae, but:

The stripe that goes down the back does not stay solid all the way down it's back, but seperates at the dorsal fin, so that there is the brownish/grey coloring between the 2 black stripes...while on the metae the black stripe stays solid all the way to the tail...

The coloring didn't seem the same as the metaes I know, and there seemed to be very faint vertical bands/stripes on the sides.

Other than that yes, they do look very similar to the metae

Oh and one last thing, they seemed to be a bit larger as well, closer to 2.5-3 inches....but not quite as large as this other cory that is similar, and not as dark in coloring as them...(sorry can't think of the name of that cory for the lie of me right now)

Is it just one of the variable metaes?

Definitely Corydoras melini. The only other cories I know of that have a stripe like that which splits are C. narcissus, C. arcuatus, and I guess C. fowleri. I think there is a metae variant that looks quite similar to melini, but this fish definitely has the color of a melini.

Yep, that splitting stripe you describe is definitely diagnostic of melini ... in fact I covered this in a post in another thread some time ago
