Rather large? 6" isn't "rather large". Having kept a trio in a 55 then later a pair in a custom 45 (roughly), a single individual in a tank with 40 odd gallons in size would be just fine. All grew to about 6 inches, give or take.

PlanetCatfish.com says the average max size is 7.2" and I swear I've seen one even bigger...

Plus, how do you know your plecostomus were comfortable in their living conditions? Did you ask them?

One pair does not guarentee sucess. Hypans are usually bred in colonies, which are, at the minimum, five fishes. 5 x 30 = 150 , dollars, that is.

Have you thought about breeding the Queens, they aren`t too hard to breed. Buy a Male and Female (The males has very long odontodes on the cheek/gills and have brighter colouration; that is to say higher contrast black and white stripes than the female).

Then you just need to make a cave which is the same size as the male, all explained in article at the end of my post, and just do a lrage water change of 50% and cool the water down slightly and they should breed. Once they grown to a lrge enough size you could take them to the LFS for some

30 dollars isn't bad for a queen. I've certainly heard of more pricey transactions involving l-200s.

Definitively! I would be more than happy to buy an expensive catfish for the one I love. I’ve always like to receive live things (e.g. plants, pets) as gifts instead of things that will die in a couple of days (i.e. flowers). But then again, I am biased towards Plecs – they are the cutest! Just be honest about it. Approach your significant other and propose the idea of getting an “expensive catfish” as a birthday/anniversary/Christmas/just because gift. Good luck!

hmm that queen arabesque is looking better and better

do you think it would be ok to ask a guy to skip the flowers and give me an expensive catfish instead?

Green and Blue Phantoms get quite large and in my opinion 40 gallons would be too small...

Green phantoms, IMO, are suited to life in a 40 gallon tank. Larger, of course, is better.

Wait, did I hear someone say L200? They are rockin', but 7" isn't exactly all that small.

I'd say that's actually a pretty good price on an Arabesque, provided it's of good size already (3"+). When I find good-sized plecs at that price it's pretty much a keeper for me.

For small plecs, the Hypancistrines tend to be some of my favorites. Can't go wrong with L46, L66, L174, L260, L333, etc.:%) That's not to say the Peckoltia's aren't bad, though, there are a lot of attractive types in those. I guess I'm a sucker for those striking black and quite colorations.

I have never kept a plec other than a common, this was way back in the 80's and early 90's when it was fairly normal to hold the opinion that fish only grow to the size of the tank you put them in...(yes, that old bit of garbage was pretty standard even 10 years ago) and that plecs were a good solution to overfeeding and poor maintenance. I was a big fan of commons then, having kept a few that were about 10" long. They were my babies.

Anyway, now I lack the space needed to house large catfish like the common plec, but I have been really wanting to get something a lot smaller and fancier.

Some of my favourites: any Peckoltia. L006, L075 are both very cute.

Hypancistrus are also cool, my LFS has a very beautiful Queen Arabesque that I have been eyeing, but the price tag and lack of funds on my part have prevented me from buying it yet. Of course, everyone loves the famous zebra plec, but I _really_ don't have the cash for even one.

Before anyone mention them, BN's are alright but to me they just don't have the class of the ones mentioned above. Nothing against them, but the price difference between a queen arabesque and a BN of the same size at my lfs is only $10 so I won't be buying a BN any time soon.

Anyone in the Southern Ontario area have somewhere that gives good deals on small plecs?

Can anyone recommend smaller species that I could keep in a 20-30 gallon tank? I'm looking for pretty markings that stand out, and hopefully something that doesn't cost me a fortune at the same time.... I don't mind spending a bit of money on a plec, as it will be the centrepiece fish in the tank.

Dare I ask how much they're asking for a Queen, Miss Moppet? My LFS wants 70 bucks for the silly thing. I mean, they're GORGEOUS, but not THAT much so! Especially since I can get even a long finned BN for under 20...
