Sounds great.

I'm sure in a few days you won't have a spot of algae anywhere in the tank.

Congratulations on your two newest acquisitions. I am sorry you had a couple of bad experiences with BNs.

Pretty sure She expired because I picked her out of the tank with a tweezer and she didn't move at all.

I got a baby Bristlenose about 1.25inches and a 3inch SAE. Both of them were very active last night. The baby, zoom back and fourth on the back wall (covered with green algae) and the SAE couldn't stop swimming exploring the tank.

They're both still alive this morning.

are you sure the pleco has expired? sometimes they lay upside down in states of joy! My BN does, sometimes seemingly attached to nothing but the tiniest frond of paper thin leaf!
If it has expired, I think you should try again. Try to look for a really healthy one, look for cloudy eyes, split fins, and signs of redness or swelling. If the fish dont look good, wait for the next shipment! There will always be another one!
BN are awesome critters! I think if you can afford the space to house a pair, try a male and a female!

Thanks for the help anyone but I just took a walk to the tank and saw her laying upside down.

Oh well. It was an impulse buy even though I knew that Petco has horrid living conditions. Ironically, I bought a baby Bristlenose from Uncle Neds (best in Boston) and it also flopped on me but during acclimation. My first acclimation loss ever.

I"ll give it another shot today (not from Petco), and if this doesn't work, i'll forgo a pleco for the time being.

I don't have a quaratine tank, so would dosing my fully stocked 30g tank affect the other inhabitants?

Now that I look at it again, I notice the red red on the fins. That should be treated, but I would use Maracyn Plus instead of Melafix, because I have used both products on multiple occasions, and I have found Maracyn to much, much more effective.

The red on the rays shows that the dorsal fin is still is the process of recession. I'd get my hands on a bottle of melafix asap, and lights off, too. Make sure that BN gets no stress for the next few days, and daily small water changes. The clearing of the eye is a good sign, though.

Also, how large is that thing? My guess would probably be a A. temminckii, possibly interchangeable with the "common ancistrus sp.". Actually, it is now believed the BNs available in the trade are a hybrid of several different species, making ID rather difficult. However, as a general rule, tememinck's ancistrus are usually more brightly molted.

I'm almost certain she will. If I am looking at the photos correctly, it appears that her dorsal fin is already starting to heal. BNs are extremely hardy fish, and I've seen many in worse shape than that make full recoveries.

Its a sure death if I return her to back to the LCFS. Its kind of exciting to see if she'll revive back to a heathly Pleco.

Maybe b/c the lights are off or bad angle, but the cloudy left eye is back to a normal black!

It's Ancistrus sp. 3, also known as the common bristlenose pleco. It's definitely a female, and while it has no (or very small) bristles, it has absolutely beautiful coloring for that species. Most of the ones that I've seen are more of a grayish color with less distinct markings.

Nice find.

No way it's an orange seam-that thing has definitely got to be a baby ancistrus sp. He does look like he has a case of cloudy eye and fin rot, but no velvet from what I can see. I would return the guy for a better specimen, or avoid that store altogether--it takes quite unsanitary conditions to get a BN that ragged looking. From the sloped forehead and the od. placement, my guess is that this fellar is actually going to grow up into a male.

Hi guys,

I tink that is a female BN, I have a male BN and looking and have been looking for a nice female BN even the ones that are 4-5inches I found have barely any bristoles on them. Sly said she is 2.5-3inches so her bristoles should be just sprouting.
I vote female

Gee
