I just got a kuhli loach a few days ago for my 10 gallon planted tank. It is a really cool fish. It reminds me of a snake....the way it moves. Anyway, I noticed that it goes into some of the grassy plants and vanishes. I want to know: Do they burrow into the gravel like worms? ....because sometimes it is nowhere to be found and there are not that many hiding places in this tank.

Ok. That is really cool. They are very snake like.

Luckily, the holes on my filter intake are small enough that it cannot fit through.

I kept five of them in my 120cm tank for a few years..... and saw them TWICE in all that time. Seriously... I counted the ocassions and remembered it because I bought them when they were about 5mm diameter and about 2cm long, put them in - they vanished within seconds obviously. Checked every day for two weeks - no joy. Thought they'd obviously died and virtually emptied all plants and decor to remove the bodies - no joy either. I even cursed my beloved, then mid-sized, clowns for eating them and 'gave up'.......... Christmas day, two years later - replacing an airstone - 1cm diameter, 5/6cm long khulis rush out and disappear again. Now I watch all my tanks for some time each day and I'd 'inspected' this one as it was my main tank at the time..... Little beggers!

I love my kuhlis

One thing to remember is kuhlis like friends and can be a bit more timid without any.

I have 6, 3 'regular' kuhlis with the bars or bands, and 3 black kuhlis (Pangio javanicus). I started with just 2 and didn't see them very often. My tank has lots of terra cotta, great hiding places for fish, especially kuhlis.

As my group got larger, and I think the fish became more comfortable in the tank, I saw more & more activity during the day. And less of the burrowing/digging, hiding activity.

I'm up for work at 2am and this tank is on a dividing wall between our living room and kitchen. I have a dim light on while getting ready for work but I'm still able to see into the tank. They're very busy at night, chasing each other all over the tank, they wind themselves up & down the airline tubing, it's great to watch.

I heard that if you go up to the tank around 3 am or any other time in the middle of the night with a flash light, you can see them feeding.

I see my kuhli about every other day.....because there are not many hiding places in my tank.

ps- theresa, your betta avatar looks like mine....kinda

I've also noticed the black kuhlis are the more active of the two species.

That's my first CT, I was messing around with pics before work and decided to change my avatar. Probably will be something different soon
