I bought 3 Kuhli loaches about 4 days ago. The day after adding the loaches to the tank, I did a partial 10% water change. I can now see only 2 of the Kuhli's come out in the evening and night and the third fellow is missing! Is the 3rd Kuhli dead.

They are about 1 to 1 1/2 inches in size, pretty thin loaches. The other tank mates are 9 clown loaches, 4 commom plecos, 2 black sharks, 2 zebra loaches.

They are known for being rather ellusive. I have 6 in a 10 gallon tank, which is fairly small, and I can't even keep track of all of them in there. They do bury themselves too, so if they were in the substrate you likely won't be able to find it.

How big is your tank? Seems like you have quite a few fish in there.

My tank is 4 feet X 18 inches X 21 inches, which is approx. 79 US gallons. The clowns are between 2 - 3 inches (two are about half an inch in size). The sharks ( I plan to give them away) are about 8 inches each. The zebras are 2 inches each. The biggest pleco is 6 inches in length, and the others are a little smaller.

Very cool fish, one of my favorites

They will definitely dig, and find any hiding spot available in the tank. IME after they become comfortable in the tank they become more active (visible) during the day.

This is one of my older, black kuhlis in his favorite resting place:

Two new kuhlis for my Asian biotope; the ruler shows how small they are. These two love to tangle themselves up in the plants:

I lost all 3 of my kuhlis within a week of putting them in my tank... I found all of them alive and well inside my filter.

now i have fine mesh over the intake!

Check your filter.

Thanks everybody, I found the 3rd Kuhli comfortably hiding under a flat stone (God knows how he got there), I fellow inside a cave in the driftwood. The opening is so small that when he puts his head out, he cant go back in because his fins block the way, and the 3rd fellow I see everyday because he is quite active.

They dont seem to be eating anything though. I dont see them touching any sinking pellets, blood worms, live worms, anything. When you say you put sinking pellets in the tank and they come get them, do you really see them munching away at the food???

I spend hours everyday looking for them and trying to see if they are growing any fatter. They are coming out a lot more these days and love sinking pellets and tubifex worms. I have two that have stripes with a yellow circle in each and one that has plain black stripes. Looks like I have two different species.
