Has anyone had any of these? I have attempted to have two of them but within a day both of these died immediately, one was on the large side, the other medium. I have checked the water and everything is right on according to it's profile. Though i have sort of given up on it it kind of bothers me. All of my other fish i have introduced to this tank are thriving but this one just does not for some reason. Any help appreciated.

on my test strips everything is middle of the road right where it should be except nitrates and nitrites which are zero or between zero and 20. No ammonia, no chlorides etc. I have other eelish fish with no problem, (dragon eel, dinosaur (senegal bichir), peacock etc) I like the eel bodies and this guy just screams cool to me so i would like know if there is something with this species i am unaware of or a special need before i try again. Thanks

What size tank do you have them in and with what other species? Most eel and loach species are territorial. To give you an idea of what works for me,

I have a dragon eel, 2 dojos, 2 zippers, 1 leopard loach, 4 clowns, and 4 skunk loaches in a 125 gallon aquarium. (partial list). Now those species are all territorial. I don't think I can get anymore in my tank. The one dojo is spotting some nipped fins while the other is fine. I actually suspect the second dojo. There is plenty of branches caves and logs but the dojos is pretty much bottom man on that totem pole. In an act of agression they are the first ones I think would disappear.

Now the reason I think they are doing so well is the introduction of plants. I have a bottom level plant mat that is pretty thick. The dojos wind up in there and disappear and everyone leaves them alone because no one else likes hiding in a spot like that. That is why I suspect dojo number two because dojo number one no longer hides there. When he dies, which I suspect he will over time due to stress, I will not replace him so that there are two again.

Shadows - nitrates of 20 is fine, but your nitrites should read 0. What sized tank are they going in? Dojos are rather peaceful, and they're very hardy. Unless the shipment was sick, I'd think one of your more carniverous fish offed them. Or, your tank reading nitrites is harming them...

Also what temperature are you keeping them at? They'll live in warmer water, but do much better in water 75 f. or below.

Dojos are more of a cool water species. I have 3 at 78F without trouble but they would prefer it in mid to low 70s and definitely not in the 80s. You might also want to check the stores tank temperatures for these guys especially if they are being acclimated to these temperatures like normal tropicals instead of given a bit more care. I've also found them to be entirely peaceful in fact more peaceful than my yoyo loaches so I wouldn't expect them to nip each others or anyone elses fins. They are rather fast but I wouldn't be surprised if a more agressive/carnivorous fish took them out. I also think I have 2 different species but the differences don't show up very well on camera. Even my boyfriend who has little interest in fish says they are quite different. I got 2 of them from a different store in a different city than the 1.
