Hello all. Well i have decided, finally, to get a 29 gallon tank and was wanting all of your opinions. What type of loaches should i get for my upcoming 29 gallon. They must not eat plants and will have to be peaceful-slightly semi-aggressive. Yoyo loaches? Pretty cheap where i live at around $3.00 a piece. Any others that are suitable that get around this size or smaller? By the way, dont mention cory cats, had a bad expierience with all of mine dieing in a 2 mont period with no apparent cause.

Yoyo and skunk loaches are nice. I like their coloring, and the fact that they stay quite small. Also, kuhli loaches only reach four inches or so, and are really interesting fish. All of these loaches are peaceful, and will leave plants alone (skunk loaches might take a nibble or two, though).

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

YoYo's are nice, but the Skunks are way too agressive.

IMHO, you never really see kuhlii loaches.

I have 2 in my 55g and i havent seen them in like 3 years now.

Skunk loaches are usually quite peaceful. They will sometimes nip fins and harass tankmates, but this behavior is not reported often. Check out the skunk loach profile [link=here]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/skunkbotia.xml" style="COLOR: #808080[/link] for verification.

I would have to agree with vic. The fact that they aren't sold as much as modestas does not detract from the fact that they are [usually] nearly as mean as the red tails. At the store, we've NEVER gotten a docile shipment of skunks in.

Cuz when we moved our tank, we took all of the decorations out, and they were sitting in there.

(i dont count that, because we HAD to see them unless they were dead)

Zebra loaches and kubotais also stay pretty small. I have both of these and they are super peaceful, good care less about plants and have barely grown at all since I got them.

I would avoid Skunk Botia and Botia Modesta (red tail blue loach). These are both horribly aggressive. In fact, one of my favorite LFS's wont even sell Botia Modesta anymore because they sold several and all came back to the store because they had killed or nearly killed fish in the aquarium. One was returned because it killed ALL the other fish in the aquarium when the people were out. Nasty critters, Keep with caution, and alone. They are intolerant of their own kind.
There are many different kinds of Botia that are good for you though! Yoyo Loaches are an obvious one. The Striped Sand Loach (not sure the true name), is also a nice Botia. Polka Dot, Botia Dario- the Queen Loach, Zebrastriped loaches, ladder loaches, horseface loaches, hillstream loaches, kuhli and black kuhli loaches, and weather loaches, are all peaceful botia and loach related species. Just check up on their sizes and pick the one you like best. I think you would be safe with pretty much any of those species though. Some people will say Weatherloaches get too big, and it is possible, but if the fish is larger, and there is no other bottom feeders, I think you could accomodate 2-3 weather loaches without a problem. They dig up plants but dont eat them.
Queen Botia- botia dario, are one of the most fun loaches in my opinion, very social, happy, pleasant critters, and gorgeous in their gold and black stripes. They get to around 5-6 inches, so you could probably again house 2-3 of these loaches. Be warned though, Botia Dario is an avid snail hunter, and will even go for apple snails 10 times their size.
Good luck in your hunt for loaches! Good choice too by the way, I am particular to loaches myself.

Occasionally, queens may become nippy, but the vast majority usually do not.
