My BN died sometime last night. I had only had her for maybe 1 to 1.5 months. I believe she was a mature (3" +) trade-in at my lfs and thought she'd still have a long life in my tank. The tank is a well established 20 g community tank. I was quite fond of her, but I'm feeling a bit discouraged. Let me explain:

Before I purchased her at "my" lfs, I grew impatient and bought a very young (probably too young) BN from a different store. It died the next day. Replaced it with another from that same store, and it died two days later. Never trusted that store, and could not find any at my favorite lfs, so Gave up temporarily. BNs are in high demand in my community, apparently. Eventually got the BN (that died last night) at my favorite lfs. Did well for nearly 2 months but died all of a sudden.

Trust me, I'm no expert. But all the other fish in my tank are perfectly healthy. I'm inclined to believe that perhaps my BN was a bit older than I thought. Nevertheless, I am feeling quite discouraged and down about plecos right now. Can anyone recommend some good literature on keeping plecostomus, specifically, dwarf species, such as BNs, clowns, etc?

I'm sorry to hear about your loss:#(sometimes it is hard to get a particular fish that you like and want to keep, and then to lose them is even worse:#( Life gets better, it really does...hml

I feel for you, I just lost a bulldog plec last week. In my case it was my own fault and now I can't find one anywhere. The bad thing too, it was my 3yr olds favorite fish.
On another note I have a BN in another tank (20G) & he/she has been around like 10 months & has survived some stoopid newbie mistakes.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the sympathy. I love plecos, but this has been so discouraging. I need to do a little more research.

So sad with the loss of your Pleco. Hope that this site will help you alot with Pleco's & Corydoras:-

http://www.planetcatfish.com/core/index.php

I don't have luck with common Pleco's. I bought 3 on 3 different occations & they don't live more than a week in my tank. When i found BN's i bought 2 & 1 of them disappeared (died) within a few days. Then i bought another 1 & it died in a week. I taught that i will try another time & if they'll die again, i don't buy more BN. Finally i bought another 2 & they survived. I don't know if it's luck or something, but for sure, i am quite happy with the 3 BN's that i have.

It's better to do a little research, NFaustman & then try your luck again with the Pleco's.

I have lost some Bn's mysteriously, until I figured out that my tank had an amonia spike. It didn't bother the white clouds, but really did a number on my poor BNs.
