Hi All

I'm upgrading to a 5 x 2.5 x 2 Ft tank
Tank Capacity:
Litres: 671.98
US Gallons: 177.54
UK Gallons: 147.83

and wanted to know your thoughts on keeping two black ghost knife fish together I find conflicting thoughs on the net so if anyone currently does keep 2 or more in a tank I'd like to hear your thoughts, both would be as young as i could get also

In a tank that large, it would most likely be fine. I only keep one, but you shouldn't have any problems with a system as large as that...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

I agree that they'd be fine in a tank that large. A couple things to keep in mind:

They are noctournal, so they need to be fed at night.

Their best tankmates are peaceful fish that are larger than they are... any fish in their tank that can fit in their mouth will get eaten during the night.

They are very timid, especially at first. they need places to hide, like plants and caves.

They're carnivores, so they need to be fed lots of bloodworms, krill, brine shrimp, small feeders like guppys and/or rosy reds, beefheart, tubiflex worms, and the like.

HTH

should be ok they bet about 10 inches so i wouldnt worry they might squabble a little but that is all keep them well fed ....when they get bigger they can eat feeders but when they are smaller they should be fed mysis and feed them after the lights go out..

In truth... you should just go ahead and try it! There is limited and conflicting information on the net. Though I myself have seen aggressive behavior between Black Ghost Knives, that doesn't mean they can't coexist peacefully (WhisperingRain is a member, who I don't see around anymore, that kept more than one in only a 55 gallon! Without problems! Granted they weren't adults, so I expect that she'd upgrade when the fish get larger).

However, there's also the chance one may rip the other to shreds, in which case it's best to keep a watch on the fish and be prepared to separate if it gets bad. You should expect a little bit of squabbling (although it's not bad if there isn't any!), so if they chase each other around and nip a little bit or even face off, don't worry. You just have to worry if one is an obvious victim to the other, in which separation is a must. This gamble is what prevents some people from trying this ('cuz it often means they have to take the fish all the way back to the store, if they even take fish back!), but it'll be all right if your local fish store has a policy that allows you to return fish.

I always see more then one in the fish shops when they are for sale.

Just as long as there is sufficent room for both of them. Keep in mind that they will grow to about a foot long.

You'll have better luck if you get them together as young fish. I bought 2 young BGKs (a few weeks apart) and they did fight sometimes but nothing too serious, they tolerate each other now but originally I put one of the younger ones in another tank with my original big BGK and the smaller one was being chased by the bigger one all around the tank non stop
I'm hoping to be able to stick the 3 of them together very soon because the younger ones have grown quite alot since.

I'd say go for it if they're young

Ok thanks guys, when things get underway I'm going to give it a go, even if I do have problems I've found that my new next door neibour has a 4ft tank and after a quick discussion with him, I'll be able to give one away to him if all go's bad (I can tell you now he's praying it dont work) but when the tank becomes a reality in a couple of months ill keep you all posted on the progress
