Two weeks ago, I bought a very small bristlenose at a store about 45 minutes away from me. It was the only store with any BNs under $30, and I really wanted one. The little guy was called a "red bristlenose" at the store, but I've never heard of one, and I didn't find anything near that description when I looked it up. Can someone help me figure out what kind of BN I have? I would really appreciate any help, because this is puzzling me.

Sorry, I can't help you with an ID but I really like that BN, nice find How large is it?

Amazing how fish prices vary by area. Around here BNs are normally under $10.

It's pretty difficult to determine the exact species of ancistrus that you have, although it looks like cory is getting pretty close. It doens't really matter, as most ancistrus species have about the same requirements.given a 29 gallon, he should grow to his maximum size fairly quickly, and, to my knowledge, unless it is some sort of oddly pigmented medusa, it should not exceed 5" inches in length.

Yes it is weird how the prices differ I am in the UK also and one of my bristle nose cost me £6.50 he/she was of a medium size with very few bristles (which makes me think it is most likely a she. The other cost me £9.50 and was a good size with lots of bristles (defo a man). Although they were both called bristle nose the are both very different from each other. One is shy and timid the other has no fear and comes out to see what you up to and is quite bossy lol.
Here is a pic of what my 2 look like

Thank you all for your replies, I didn't think I'd get so many in one night. I think my BN looks like the red spot, and it looks like the piebald BN. I guess I'll be able to narrow it down once it gets older. I hope I picked a male, because I really want my BN to have lots of bristles!
Well, my little guy is about an inch or so, maybe a little longer. It's pretty much a baby still. I paid $25 U.S. for him/her, so I'm not going out to buy another one anytime soon.

By the way, how often do BNs fan their dorsal fins like the ones in the photos? I've never actually seen mine's dorsal.

They usually do it only when there are stressors involved, like when:

1. You pick the fish up out of the water and hold it by the head (this doesn't hurt them).

2. They are defending territory against other plecos.

3. To scare other fish away. When my L182 (starlight BN) is eating an algae wafer and a lot of fish crowd around him, he will sudden raise his dorsal fin which scares the other fish away.
