A new Synodontis species has been described.

Synodontis acanthoperca is notable for several reasons:

[1] It could be the smalles tSynodontis species known - reaching a maximum SL of just 5 cm;

[2] It is very attractively marked;

[3] It possesses an opercular spine making it unique to the Genus, and indeed unique among African Catfishes as a whole;

[4] It is sexually dimorphic, which means that when it arrives in the aquarium trade in numbers, breeding projects will become possible.

This could be the answer to the prayers of every keeper of West African biotope aquaria looking for a small catfish species - it's about the size of a typical Corydoras, but it's a genuine African Mochokid catfish! it also possesses stunning markings, and would be a fine addition to any catfish collection!

Practical Fishkeeping article on the new Synodontis catfish

Enjoy!

That's pretty cool. Mochokids are never a bad thing.

Thanks for the post and the link. A very nice looking catfish and hopefully will become available to the hobby.

Chances are the first ones imported in any numbers will, like most new arrivals, be hideously expensive ... but if they breed in captivity, that should hopefully change.

That was the reason I was hoping they would be resonably easy to breed, because of the high price they will demand

You and about ten million other catfish fans in the States alone (not counting all us European ones) will be hoping this fish breeds well in captivity too, because it'll be an absolute storm once it does take off - a truly 'micro' Synodontis catfish with beautiful markings and a reasonably easy going temperament should be a wow in the trade if the trade people have their heads screwed on!

I've bumped this old thread on Synodontis acanthoperca for a reason ... I found the paper describing the species, WITH PHOTOGRAPHS!

Here is the paper ((Warning: substantial sized PDF, may take long time to download on dialup).

Enjoy ...
