I bought seven brochis splendens yesterday. Six are clowning around, swarming over the bogwood, feeding on an algae wafer, etc. in their 30-gallon quarantine tank.

The last one has, since yesterday afternoon, been frantically swimming up and down the glass in the rear corners.

Should I assume he'll settle in eventually? Is he just neurotic? Or is there a problem I haven't figured out?

Water parameters are perfect; no ammonia, nitrites; nitrates under 10. There are no other fish in the tank, but it's fully cycled and decorated with plants, bogwood, flowerpot cave, etc. -- I moved the last of its previous occupants out yesterday a couple hours before buying the emeralds.)

I wouldn't worry about it. Whenever I buy cories and take them home, I notice that they like to scurry up and down the tank glass for a few days. It seems like this is their method of exploring or getting used to the tank. My cories all quit doing this after they have settled in, so I assume that your Brochis will, as well.

However, if it is taking constant gulps of air from the surface and rarely returning to the bottom, you have a problem. Sick cories and Brochis will do this, possibly to replenish the oxygen in their failing system. Still, you probably just have a cory that needs an extra day or so to get used to the tank. Enjoy the new fish!

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Thanks. I just took a good look, and he's not breaking the surface at all, so I don't think he's after air. I'll give him a few days and assume he'll settle in.

It's really fun to watch these guys, because they really do seem to enjoy group activities. All my other supposed schooling/shoaling fish (zebra danios, rainbowfish, etc.) don't spend much time hanging out in groups -- at least not the way the emeralds do.
