Most small bottom feeders (that I know of) are schooling fish, so you need more than 5 of them (preferably more). 10g's generally aren't big enough to keep a school of fish in... so yer basically out of luck with a 10g full of loaches or cories unless it's heavily planted, has a lot of hiding places, and gets a lot of waterchanges. Some may argue that Dwarf Cories would be fine... but they prefer large schools (like 15 minimum is what I've heard), and still wouldn't go in a 10g.

I'd personally get a bigger tank if you want loaches and cories. 55g would be good...you could have 2 schools of 2 different kinds of cories (Peppered cories and Panda cories, for example)...and have more than the minimum number of the fish for the school, and then you'd actually get to see some personality show in the fish!

I've got 2 schools of cories in my 29g...but I don't have as many cories as I'd like to have in there (they're still kinda shy because there's not enough of them)...and the bottom is rather crowded, so I can't get more.

If you want some bottomfeeders in that 10g, you might want to try shrimp, ottos, or a snail or something that won't get very big

In a 10 gallon, you could have a group of kuhlis or a group of corys, not both. Not only is the bioload too much, but since both species are bottom dwellers, there is not enough space for each individual fish.

The inch per gallon rule is a bit to basic to be applied here. Kuhli are by no means equivalent in body mass or swimming space to say a 3-4" gourami or congo tetra. In my 55g I probably wouldn't even notice them but I definitely would notice 4 more congo tetras. Even without the kuhli loaches this setup has problems. Getting the more active loach species the number of fish it prefers and keeping the minimum swimming space it prefers is impossible with that size tank. The zebra loach and yoyos would both have the same problems and while 4 might work it's not ideal. A 20 is your best bet to keep happy loaches.

There are actually several loaches that get called the zebra loach but they all reach around 4" or bigger. The yoyo loach also gets 4". It might be possible to keep these guys as a group of 4 in a 10g if they are the only fish but they are quite active and would consider it a bit cramped. Also the ideal number would be 6 or more loaches which really would be pushing swimming space for these guys. The kuhli work in small tanks despite their length because they have a thinner body shape, bend more, and aren't nearly as active. It's not the biofilter I'm thinking of it's the actual space. I can way overstock a tank and still have no ammonia, nitrites, or much nitrate but that doesn't mean the fish are happy. My yoyos spend their days bouncing around the aquarium swimming circles around the heater/filter intakes, and generally never seem to sit still. You could get a 20g for not much more space or money.

dwarf loaches are bigger than a zebra loach and just as active zebras only get to 3 inches maybe four inches thats only 9 to 12 inches just the zebras and the khuli loaches are so small that theyd only add like 2 or3 inches to the bio load are u sure this isnt possible

I'd substitute the Zebra Loaches for a group of three Botia sidthimunki, because the Zebra Loaches get too large and are too active for a 10 gallon tank.

welcome ok, are these the only fish in the tank, or the only loaches? and about what percent of the water would you change?

It will be overstocked once the Zebra Loaches get bigger. It's better to return them to the LFS or get a bigger tank.

That tank would be overstocked with the loaches you mention. Zebra loaches grow too large for a ten gallon tank regardless of how many there are, and three to four kuhlis would be pushing it for bottom feeders. Though kuhli loaches are very thin, they do have the potential to reach four inches in length, and a ten gallon tank doesn’t give fish a lot of room to swim in. Luckily, kuhlis don’t need tons of space, and will tolerate a ten gallon as long as they have sufficient hiding places.

I’d go with just three kuhlis, then work on adding some fish that inhabit the mid to upper layers of the tank. You want to balance things out, so that the tank looks nice and evenly stocked.
