No kidding. Pretty cool.

This reminds me, though: did they ever come up with a valid scientific name for the zebra oto? Last I heard they had decided it was a different species, but hadn't come up with a taxonomic name.

The Zebra Otocinclus is now known as Otocinclus cocama.

I like the etymology for this new fish - Otocinclus batmani ...

Etymology. The name batmani, alludes to Bob Kane’s hero Batman of the comic adventures, which had a bat shape for his symbol, referring to the single W- or bat-shaped vertical spot on the caudal-fin.

Hahaha... I want some Batman Otos.

It seems to have a pretty wide distribution in the Amazon Basin though... Why wasn't it discovered and described a long time ago?

"Why wasn't it discovered and described a long time ago?"

Because they only fight crime at night.

Nice critter. I'd like to see if the live coloration is much different than that of the fish pictured.

I doubt it, Nick. It says in the paper "the new species is distinguished from all other Otocinclus species...by having a single, intensely-pigmented, vertical W-shaped caudal fin spot...", and the one preserved in alcohol actually looks fairly close to the coloration of most other Otocinclus species, so I bet that that is the living color as well.
