I've been considering otocinclus for my 20g tank for a while to keep my soft algae in check (it grows despite zero nitrates and phosphates) and just wondered if they'd suit the tank and it's current inmates:

1x silver hatchetfish
4x cherry barb
5x rummy nose tetra

(possibly adding 1 or 2 friends for the hatchetfish soon).

I know of Otto's only what I've read on the web so any advice at all would be appreciated. Cheers!

Don't see any problems with that mix. Go get your Otocinclus and treat them to an algae banquet.

And ... yes, you guessed it ... Obligatory Otocinclus Article Plug ...

While this may sound strange, make sure your tank has as much brown algae as possible before adding the ottos. They are usually starving to death at the store and a good supply of food really helps them out. It also funny to see the ottos paths they carve thru the algae when they 1st start feeding in their new home.

Yes, you can add some Otos & they like to stay in groups, so it's better to get 3/4.

Aw dear... I lost one last night just found it dead. I tested the water and it's a bit high with phosphates and nitrates but nothing too bad. The pH is a little above the recommended 7.0 but I've done a water change (50/50 with water from my main tank) and now it's just fingers crossed for the others. no sign of disease.

well yes...ottos...sometimes just die off for no apparent reason...it could be that the one uve got is sick in the 1st place....that usually happens to me...whenever i get 2..i almost always ended up with 1...but that one...will continue thriving in the tank..till i get new ones..then one of them will die...buy hey, i luv my ottos...they r relentless little buggers...always on the move...and i like them specially when they start chasing some fish or when they eat with them.

btw...Cali....i enjoy (still reading from time to time) ur article....its one of the best ive read

Unfortunately ottos do have two bad habits: dying and disappearing.

i bought 5 ottos for my 29 gallon, i was so sick of not being able to see through the glass because of the brown algae] within 2 days.. all clear i love my ottos, and they are so fat im about set to take a small tank and set in a window for a week or 2, so i can give em a good feedingor just get some lillys, the submursed leaves collect algae readly, and its a favorite snack for ottos
