I just had my new bulldog pleco pass away because of it's refusal to eat anything. Now, since my tank is starting to grow a little algae, and my pleco just died, I still need an algae eater. Since bristlenoses are not availible in my area, I have just two real options. Do I get another bulldog to replace it, or should I buy two or three ottos?

My tank is a 29 gallon, the stocking list is as follows: One betta, six lemon tetras, and six corydoras polystictus.

I'd get 6 ottos.. you're guarenteed to have a few die, so that way, you'll have a few left.

Ienno, I never had ottos die on me. Btw, you didn't happen to get your bulldog from petsmart did you? Their fish maintenance just doesn't seem up to par, IMO. Regardless, ottos all the way if you're just looking for an algae solution---they're far more effective than bulldogs.

Personally, I'd get the ottos.. Good workers and they're always fun to try and find in the plants.. I keep a herd of them in my son's guppy tank to keep the algae down and have never had trouble with them..

Good Luck deciding..

All right then, I'm now decided on ottos. Now the problem I have is how many to get. I worry that I won't have enough algae for a lot of ottos, any suggestions? I was thinking two, maybe three.

You can always supplement their diets, sirbooks.. I don't have any trouble with algae in my son's tank (knock on wood) so I give my ottos an algae wafer that's broken into smaller pieces daily.. I also give them fresh peas.. Keeps em nice and fat

Openwater, I wish I could order a bn from the 'net but shipping costs are too much for me. I have plenty of algae wafers (I feed them to my cories as a treat), so if ottos will eat them, that's good news. So then, would three be a good number?

i'm glad you went with them, they are sooo cute hehe

i'd say somewhere between 4-6 think they'd be happier like that, and i have heard that they have a tendency to die for no real reason especially in transport

Well, since I am planning on adding a cichlid (probably a german ram) later on, would it be all right if I got two or three now, then maybe added some later? I want to make sure my water is of tip-top quality, so I don't want to overload with fish.

I'd start with four, usually one or more will die.
I started with 3 or 4, a couple died so I added a few more.
Went thru 7 otos to end up with 3..

Otos are really enjoyable once they're used to the tank and feeding well on algae : )

I love the 6 ottos I've got in my 29g...

They're a shoaling fish, so the more you get the happier they are.

If there are a decent amount of plants in the tank, I'd get 5-6 ottos...if not, 4-5

sirbooks, feeding the ottos is nothing, really.
first you shouldn't feed them until they clean the tank, and then just drop in any vegie. they eat alot, so don't be afraid to overfeed them.
