I have five adult and 4 younger Pandas. Of the young ones three are the same age and one youinger. The older of the 'kids' are now beginning to get to sexual maturity....the boys are 'cleaning the glass' and following the older guys around as they wooo the girls.

I'm wondering if I should add some new Pandas to the tank in order to add some other genes to the mix. Or, is inbreeding not a problem?

Thanks

Eric

Inbreeding shouldn't be a concern for you, since it takes multiple generations for it to affect fish. I'm unsure of the approximate number of generations involved for inbreeding to manifest itself as a problem, and that number does change since it is affected by the amount of undesirable genes in the fish, but rest assured that you should not have problems with it in your cories.

With that having been said, panda cories are very social fish and will always welcome new additions to their shoal. It wouldn't hurt to add new cories as long as it doesn't overstock the tank.

I concur with the above. Shouldn't be a major problem unless they've been inbreeding for quite a few generations. Of course you don't know how inbred your stock was when you bought it, which complicates matters a bit, but adding more (preferably from a different source) to stir up the gene pool diversity not only helps a lot, but as Sirbooks said above, will make your existing Pandas even happier because with Pandas in particular among the more popular Corys, the more, the merrier. If you're fortunate and you can source, say, a total of 12 from three different outlets with three different wholesale suppliers, this should go a long way toward making sure your gene pool is nice and healthy.

Speaking of which, I have more fry ... pity you're on a different continent, we could arrange a swap
