One of my pandas is very round around the middle....maybe like she is carrying eggs? ANy info on that would be appreciated. BUt anyways, she appears to be coming to the surface a lot more frequently than the rest of my pandas. Is this normal panda behavior? ALl of my params appear to be normal (I havent been able to afford a real test kit yet) Its a 20 long, with 8 pandas, and dwarf gourami and a few tetras.

Hi Sam: Is your Panda darting to the top and darting back down, or, is she lingering near the top? If she is darting, that is very normal Panda behavior. If she is lingering, then there is something going on.

Do you have plenty of oxygenation in your tank? If so, the dashing to the surface isn't a problem, and is normal Corydoras behavior.

If your cory is constantly swimming at the surface and gulping air, then it is in trouble. Every time I have observed a cory doing that, it was quite ill, and usually died within a week or so.

Which kind of "coming up for air" is it?

I think your Panda is perfectly normal!! As a matter of fact, it may be a "mating thing."

It is definately the normal coming up for air, and as far as i know i have plenty or aeration, i have a bubble wall along the whole back and a good filter. It is def. the same thing as all the others do when they go up for air, short and quick, its just more frequent! THanks for the quick responses? I hope it is mating behavior!
Anything else i should know?

This little piece of mine should tell you all you need to know

Note: juvenile Pandas swim against currents because in their home waters, they are carried downstream as fry, and swim upstream to return to the place of their birth. So powerhead and bubble surfing is a maifestation of that instinct reasserting itself

As they begin to mature, they start swimming up and down the glass a lot. This is covered in the piece above.

Happy Panda keeping!

PS: almost forgot. That article I linked to is a BIG one. Print off and read at leisure!

I read this post and thought about something I noticed the other day.

I too noticed that one of my Pandas was staying at the top of the water, and from where I was sitting it look as though he/she was gasping for air.

I paniced and rushed over to the tank to see what was wrong, but here he/she seemed to be chasing this piece of shrimp floating on the top of the water. Is this something Pandas normally will even do?

I relaxed when he/she finally got ahold of the shrimp and immediately shot down to the bottom of the tank to eat it.

Be warned. Pandas are fond of comedy tricks like this

I've had them trying to climb out of the water because they thought there might be something tasty lurking on the algae growing under the glass ledges that support my hood

I've also had them do Synodontis impersonations under the bogwood arch, and sit on the Amazon Sword leaves in the current swaying about using the leaves as underwater budgie swings
