I have had my Pandas for a while now, and they have always been in a tank with Zebra Danios.

For the most part, they have been "boring" compared with my Bronzies in another tank, always huddling together and rarely doing all the fun stuff that I had read about.

Last week I needed to do a bit of shuffling between tanks, and so I took out the danio's and put in some male guppies.

All I can say is "WHAT A DIFFERENCE!". My Pandas are now bouncing around and having a great time playing.

The danio's never hasssled the Panda's but maybe the speed of them zipping around scared them. Anyone have any ideas?

Anyway, all I can say is that if you've got shy Panda's maybe it's their tank mates causing the problem.

Maybe - one of the reasons I thought I'd post and mention it.

I must say I am glad that I had to move my male guppies (randy buggers!) otherwise I would have just forever have been disappointed with my Pandas.

So glad thet your Panda's are active. It could have been the speed of the Danios or maybe something else. Who knows, Corydoras are cute & weird.

If the tank size is fairly modest, then the Pandas won't have had space to escape from the frenetic Danios. They tend to regard fast movements above their heads as a warning that there are predators in the vicinity, because that's how their companions in their native waters would behave if, for example, fish eating birds were on the prowl. Since Pandas naturally live in fairly shallow streams and rivers, and tend not to venture too deep, they use visual cues of this sort to keep tabs on the likes of Egrets or Herons. The Characins and other native South Americans in their home waters won't behave as frenetically as the Danios unless spooked by airborne threats.

In a larger aquarium, however, where there is space for the two to coexist without the Pandas being constantly spooked, they should be more compatible with Danios.

Wait till you see them with a bunch of South American Characins as companions. Heh, Mata Hari and the boys have more or less staged a takeover in my aquarium, which is why it's been known as the Panda Fun Palace™ for over two years
