If you don't want a bristle nose pleco, why not try a rubbernose pleco. They stay small for a pleco, and eat algae.

I have a rubbernose... Cute as a button... I also have a candystripe pleco... Cute as a slightly ugly-er button. Both would be great in any tank 29g and larger.

What size tank are we talking here? That could help us narrow down the choices a bit.

Rubbernose, candy stripe, and butterfly plecos are all small, and are good algae eaters. Otocinclus catfish are very small, and are usually great at eating algae. It depends on your preference, and what size tank you have.

The best algae eating loricariids are:

otos
paraotos
twig cats (farowellas)
whiptails
BNs

in that order

I have a rubbernose plecs in two of my tanks and the are great algea eaters. The one managed to clear an entire tank of algea in only a few days and he is very little. They have great personalities and don't bother any of the other fish. I definitely recommend them!

Petey, my striped rubbernose, is my fav fish. Loads of personality, takes great care of the glass and rocks in my 30 gal, and top size is something like 4 inches (?). Petey is about 3 1/2 inches. plecofanatics.com and planetcatfish.com are great places to look at pics and for general info and profiles

I was about to start this very topic since my 9" plec died today and I was wondering about a replaceent.
I'm pretty convinced by the rubbernose, but just one thing; most places i've now read about them seem to imply they need fast cool water. My water is fairly fast but not wildly cold, and it's quite a deep tank. will this be okay?

clown pleco?

Clowns, like nearly all species in the genus Panaque, eat very little (if any) algae. They are wood-eaters in nature.
