It's better to take them back, than let them live in a small tank & eventually die.

Thanks everyone. I am going to see if my lfs will order me either a bristlenose or a bulldog. They said that I can bring back the plecos...

Chaestoma sp. are not reccomended for the average community tank, because they need very low temperatures for optimal health. In short: don't get one.

Hmm when i used to have an outdoor pond abt 5m in length and abt 2m in width full of koi (japanese carp), we kept 2 oc those common plecs in there for algae control and they grew to abt 13" in there. The pond was big enuff to contain them, so there was no need to return them to the lfs

P: The weather here in singapore is just perfect for keeping tropical fish. since the normal temp everyday all yr round is abt 32, the water only gets to abt 26degC, so the temp was perfect for keeping koi and plecs together

A rubbernose or bulldog pleco (same species, different name) will only get to be about 5", well small enough for a 38 gal. Not as stunning as the common pleco, but mine loves his algae and isn't afraid to be seen in the daylight cleaning the glass.

It's better to get a Bristlenose. It eats Algae & stays rather small. You can also do some research on the "Species Profiles" on this site.

I love the zebra pleco, but have no idea where to get one and I am certain it would cost an arm and a leg!

Yep, if (and that's a strong if) you are even able to find them, expect to pay anywhere from $170-250 for a single specimen. And not only that, but they are carnivores as well and will not even touch algae.

Your best bet would be a bristlenose pleco (Ancistrus sp.). They rarely get longer than 5" and are excellent algae eaters.

I have to take some of the blame...I should have done my research first.

So what would be a good replacement for the plecos? I will need someone to control algae.

Well if the lfs would have properly advised you as to what species they were and the eventual size they would reach then it wouldn't have been a problem. They created the situation themselves.

Yes, those are definitely common plecos (Pterygoplichthys pardalis and will outgrow a 38 gallon tank pretty quickly.

A 100 gallon tank is appropriate in terms of the capacity for a full-grown specimen, but the dimensions are horrible on those tanks. I personally wouldn't recommend that this species be kept long term in anything less than a 120 gallon (which has good dimensions).

look exactly like my common pleco did.

You can keep him in that tank for about 5 months then you should move him to a bigger tank.

Mine is 13" in my dads tank.
