I was wondering- I have a 29g tank. I like the looks of the commom pleco... but understand that they grow really large. Are there any other algae eaters that look like these fish that would be suited in a 29g tank.

It is a community tank.

Otos, Bristlnose Plecos, Rubberlip Plecos, Siamese algae Eaters, or American Flag Killies would be acceptable choices, depending on the type of algae and water parameters.

The Bristlenose only gets to be about 5 inches, but that may even be too big for your tank depending on what else you have in there. A group of Oto's might be the best choice, depending on your current stock. They are pretty small, but I've read that they can be delicate if not acclimated correctly.

A BN will do well in a 29 gal. tank & they look like common Pleco's, with the exception of the bristles on it's face, when they get older.

They are excellent Algae eaters & quite timid. If possible, add a piece of Driftwood, as they like to munch on it.

"Bristlenosed" refers to the cutaneous rostral processes of over 50 described (and many more as of yet unclassified) fish that range from 3"-12", approximately. It is impossible to generalize that all of these species will be able to fit in a 29g, or that all eat algae.

When "Bristlenose Pleco" is seen on here, it is generally assumed to mean the common Bristlenose Pleco (that or Ancistrus triradiatus, both of which are commonly imported), the one you can buy in any store for five bucks.

Other Bristlenoses are likely to be a lot more expensive and probably won't be sold just under the name "Bristlenose Pleco".

Depends on where you go. Given that the catching season has just recently been terminated, I still regularly see L-182, 100, and 344, amongst others, listed as "assorted bushynose catfishes" at work and in nearby aquatic warehouses, all for around 14 bucks a pop.

the common Bristlenose Pleco is good. The female has this little white dot at the back end, but has very little or no bristles. The male does not have the white dot, but gets the bristles that you can actually see. It works in a 29g, since I have a 20g, and my BN is doing just fine, hiding under driftwood
