Can anyone tell me what kind of plecostomus this is? It is black and light "orangy" in color. Thank you.

At first glance I thought it may have been a young Gibbiceps...but they have round spots on their belly not to mention all over the rest of their body...I think you might have a nicer looking common pleco...

Definitely looks like a hypostomus, not a pterygoplichthyinid. If you could, count the total number of dorsal rays and get back to me.

I can count eight rays. He has a really broad head also. Thanks for your help.

Yup. That's a hypostomus, and a damn good looking one at that. Good luck with it.

Thank you for the helpful replies. What is the difference between a plecostomus and a hypostomus?

Plecostomus is just the general name for all suckermouthed catfish from the family loricariidae. hypostomus is a genus under said family.
