I was doing a deep gravel vac since I am rearanging some things and when I lifted the rock the kuhlis live under I noticed one was considerably larger than the other two. I thought one might have died since I've only seen two in the past month, glad I was wrong. Does anyone know what a pregnant kuhli looks like?

Maybe she is full of eggs? But if she is looking like pineconish I wouldn't think so...

Nope. She or he doesnot look like a pinecone. Maybe I just have a fat kuhli. She/he gets wider from the head back and the tale from the anal fin is small. Don't know maybe I'll just watch and see. P.S. what scales?

Kuhli loaches do occasionally spawn in home aquaria, but it is pretty rare. The eggs are bright green, so you'd know if one of them laid eggs.

The water parameters would have to be near to what kuhlis are used to in the wild though, with soft, acidic water.

no amonia
no nitrites
nitrate 2.0
ph 8.0 about
my water is hard
alkalinity around 180

I don't think this is ideal kuhli water but they do ok.

That water is perfectly fine for regular maintenance, but they are unlikely to spawn. It is more likely that one of them is just eating more than the other, and therefore you have varying sizes between individual fish.

Yea, my kuhli does look sort of like a snake after it eats. I'll just have to wait and see.

Thats a link to loaches.com. A Short but useful article about breeding kuhlies including 2 pics of a kuhli full with eggs and 1 picture with the actual eggs. Hope it helps.

My kuhli isn't quite that fat yet definetly the same basic shape. hhmmm, I wonder? I did see something that looked like the eggs under some driftwood where they hang out, not there any more though I do have 6 corys. I will have to keep an eye out to see if there's any more and isolate them. I do have a 20gal with a dozen white clouds and a guppy.
