I think my oto might be pregnant. Normally on the underside of her I can see the spiral, but in the last couple of days it hasnt been as visible. She also is expanding sideways quite a bit. I read on fishprofiles.com that otos lay their eggs on the underside of plant leaves. I have a small bunch of amazon swords so I suspect she will lay them there. But what do the eggs look like? And will she only lay one or two, or 20? I thought I also read that they lay several a day for a little while. Will I need to remove the pregnant mom and a plant to a smaller aquarium so that the babies will survive? I only have a pair of sailfin mollies and a pair of platys in the tank as well. The sailfins did go after their own young so I don't see any reason why they wouldn't go after the oto babies as well. Also, any special care for oto babies? Thanks.

I dunno, but I believe otto spawning is a relatively rare occasion---good luck with it, and keep us posted.

Otto eggs are very small, spherical objects. If your female is indeed laden with eggs, then there would be quite a few eggs, not just one or two. I'm not sure on the exact number, as I don't know much about breeding ottos.
I would venture to guess that your other fish might try to eat otto eggs or fry, so you might try a breeding trap. That would seperate any hungry fish from your baby ottos.

As for the spawning of ottos, and information related to it, you might try this link: [link=http://otocinclus.com/breeding.html]http://otocinclus.com/breeding.html" style="COLOR: #808080[/link]
I don't really know anything about raising the fry, but I assume they would need good water quality, and very small fry foods to live.

I've had otto's spawn in my 55 gallon tank. I kept a total of 6 ottos in the tank and as ottos go they were huge. I didn't see anything and never noticed and of them get fat, just had two tiny otto's show up. I had over 45 fish in the tank but also lots of hiding places. Good luck.
