Here are two pics to show the difference: real julii: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/callicht/corydora/378_1.php trilineatus:http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/callicht/corydora/508_1.php |

sly![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Big Fish Posts: 377 Kudos: 251 Votes: 0 Registered: 22-Jun-2004 ![]() ![]() | [font color="#BF791F"]The differences between C. julii and C. trilineatus are difficult to distinguish. It used to be that if it had reticulation, it was C, trilineatus; if it had spots it was considered C. julii. Further research on those two species has shown that they are both very variable in their markings. In the wild, there are populations of C. julii that have reticulation, as well as C. trilineatus that have only spots. C. julii is said to be slightly smaller and more stout than C. trilineatus, however even this is extremely difficult to notice even by experts. To make identifying them even harder, their ranges overlap in some areas. Since they live in the same areas, and they look nearly exactly the same, it is said that the main reson why they are considered different species is because they do not interbreed with each other. Fortunately, where they overlap does not have commercial exporters. This means that unless you go deep into the Brazilian rainforests specifically looking for C. julii, every fish you find will be C. trilineatus. So basically, the minor difference between the two species is that one (C. trilineatus) is extremely common in the hobby, while the other (C. julii) is never encountered in a regular fish store.[/font] -Cory Addict [span class="edited"][Edited by sly 2004-08-02 17:58][/span] |
