They are generally plant safe, but do grow rather large-in excess of 12 inches in length, and very, very wide. They are, however, very peaceful, to the point where, if not specially fed, may be outcompeted for food.

Royal plecos are in my opinion, the coolest looking plecos. They can get up to a foot or so long, and get almost as wide as they are long. They won't really bother plants, as previously stated, and are some of the more peaceful plecos. They do prefer a good current in their tank, and like lots of oxygen in the water.

almost as long as they are wide? so then they're round? sure, they're fat, but that's a little overboard. i agree though, royal plecos are cool. i wish i had a 90g tank....

Royal Plecs and other Panaque are just frickin' tanks, but they're awesome just the same; most Panaque species will exceed a foot in length. My Royal Plec is easily my favorite fish of all time. Just throw in a piece of wood, which they'll shred quite easily, and feed them regularly and you should have no problems. These fish are pretty easy to keep, but like every plec likes to hide.

I had problems feeding mine at first. He was very skinny for the first few months i had him, but now he is bulking up. Sinking wafers are good or you can prepare a vegetable meal for him of your own. As said, they get to be about 12", but in my experience they grow very slowly. I've had mine for about a year and he really hasnt grown in lenght much, but he has fattened up nicely.
