I just went into a new petsmart that opened near me just to look around and I ended up buying a rubber lip dwarf pleco. Anyone have any experience with them.

He was only $2.29.

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. Most PetSmarts have these fish, they are Chaetostoma milesi, also known as the bulldog pleco. They are pretty decent algae eaters, somewhat hardy, peaceful, and all that stuff. They like veggies, so supplement the tank's algae with algae wafers (fed nightly) and vegetables, which you can give them several times a week. These are good plecos for a community tank, and may even come out during the day for you. As long as you keep your water quality decent, the fish should be fine.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

I have one. He's a great fish. He had my tank completely algae free within a day and a half of his arrival, and has kept it that way ever since.

They're supposedly nocturnal, but mine's not --he hangs out in the open all day every day.

My only problem has been feeding him -- I do give algae wafers and shrimp pellets, and assume he eats them because I've had him for a year and he's not starving. But he has no interest at all in fresh veggies like zucchini or cucumbers, which according to all the books he's supposed to love. And he hasn't really grown -- he's still only about three inches.

My first instinct would be to say no. They like cooler waters with a LOT of current and little to no plantage. The general consensus is to keep them in completely unheated tanks. In the wild, they don't feed a great deal on algae--moreso aquatic inverts than anything else.

I just moved mine out of the 10 back into his old home, the 29. He loves it. There is new furniture in there, a large hollow driftwood thing from Petrsmart that has tubes and caves all thru it. haven't seen him in a couple days cause since he found it he hasn't come out, lol. I konw he's in there I keep lookin, drop an algae wafer to him once in a while...

I have a rubberlip and a bristlenose in my heavily planted 46. There is 4 pieces of driftwood one with a tunnel through it and these two plecos still stay out in the open.

In fact the two follow each other around the glass alot.

I also have a candystrip which I haven't seen in a week as well as a snowball and albino which I don't see as often.
