Hello,
How can I tell if my pleco is a common pleco or a sailfin pleco?

sailfin plecos usually have HUGE back fins.

do you have a picture?

How much did you pay for the pleco?

If you go to the profiles of this site and search for "sailfin" you come up with this:

[link=http://fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/gibbiceps.xml]http://fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/gibbiceps.xml" style="COLOR: #FF82AB[/link]

Notice that the dorsal fin covers the pleco's back, from where the fin starts down to the base of the tail.

The common pleco, as found here:

[link=http://www.mikesfishing.com/pleco/common_plecos.htm]http://www.mikesfishing.com/pleco/common_plecos.htm" style="COLOR: #FF82AB[/link]

has a much smaller dorsal fin that only extends partially down the back.

Also notice the different markings of each species. The commons have a smaller, connected spot pattern, while the sailfins have larger rounder spots. The pattern of a sailfin remind me of a giraffe.

Sailfins are spotted while paradlises are generally reticulated at maturity.
