Hey all

About 6 months ago one of my clown loaches became extremely skinny and eventually died. Now, it appears that another one is suffering the same fate. He has now outward signs of illness and is still feeding.

Has anyone else had this problem or have any idea what it is? All my other fish are healthy and pH is fine. I do a quarter water change every fortnight. The tank is 50g and has the 2 loaches, 3 columbian tetras, 2 blue gouramies and 2 angel fish in it.

Cheers!

It could be stress from not having enough clowns in the tank. Clowns are shoaling fish and like groups of each other to keep them happy. Unfortunately your tank isn't really big enough for that.

I heard of some doing that and it could be that they don't have enough friends.

Clown Loaches thinning out and dying is a common occurance...

There's a percentage, especially those purchased very small, that just fail to thrive.

There's not a lot that can be done.

They stop eating, thin out, bellys become hollow and they die.

Thanks for your advice everyone. I did buy my loaches quite small so that may well be it. I have noticed that he feeds while swimming upside down while my other (fat and healthy loachey......)feeds normally. I think it helps if i grind the food up quite small. He is certainly feeding quite frantically. I will let you all know how he goes....
