Ok as some know I inherited (leslie inherited, whatever) 2 adult BN when I won the 75 gallon tank on ebay. Well, the tank has been set up since Saturday, and apparently the little girl (yeah right little) is feeling her oats today. Leslie called me today while I was at inservice (perfect timing I was going to lunch) to tell me, that the female was splashing water everywhere. Well, I figured she was splashing a little, heck all fish do from time to time. But, when I got to Leslie's and went to walk by the tank I could feel how damp the carpet was getting...and since sitting here for an hour or so, I've caught her swimming to the top an slapping at the water with her tail sending big splashes up out of the tank...now the unfortunate thing is the tank didn't come with a lid, but this weekend I figure i'll be getting some glass cut to create a lid (in two sections) for the tank.

So is she just feeling frisky? (clean water, places to hide, something other than gravel on the bottom, with filtration) Trying to get her guys attention? All that she has accomplished so far is to get the carpet damp, and get him out of fake log cave he's decided is his to own...or is she just trying to thank us for the zuchinni, and nice clean tank with filtration? What's up with her...hml

Females do not, to my knowledge, perform such physically demanding stunts to attract a mate. If anything, the females are the ones to select a prospective mate, not vice versa.

What is the temperature of the tank?. Maybe it's too high?. Get a lid as soon as you can or else place something on it.

Watch the fish more closely the next time it goes up. I have seen plecos of different species head to the surface for a gulp of air, much like Corydoras catfish. Whenever I've seen a plec do this, they were stressed from a recent move. My bristlenose did this on the day that I brought it home. Maybe that's what your fish is doing.

She might have been gulping air. If she was splashing all that water because she was stressed, she is not doing it today. She is lying calmly beside the male's log. Funny that they have been set up in the tank since Saturday and she waited until Thursday to start splashing if it was due to stress. I will keep everyone updated. If there are eggs, how long does it take them to hatch?

Don't Loricariid catfishes take air at the surface as part of their respiratory cycle, like Corys?

I have good reason to believe that's what my Otocinclus do occasionally. And it's not as if they have water cleanliness to worry about, given my water change and gravel vac régime.

I know that ottos will go up for air as well, and I've seen a farlowella or two do the same. It may well be something that the entire family Loricariidae can do.
