I'm looking for tank mates that will not pester the male pleco while he guards the eggs or eat the babies once they are free swimming. The tank is a planted 70 gallon (US) tall with lots of rock caves. The tank used to be a community. Now the focus is on breeding the plecos. I would like to get something colorful and schooling like neons or cardinals, but I don't want to take a chance on loosing any of the babies.

Hatchet fish might work for the simple reason that these fish rarely leave the surface of the water and so wouldnt come in contact with pleco fry.
They come in 3 common varieties in stores, the Silver hatchet, larger and solid silver, the marbled hatched, smaller, marbley golden color, and the marthaes hatchet, which looks very similar to the marbles.

Or, a group of colorful shrimp like cherry shrimp, or a snail or two.

I always leave the breeding fish alone when trying to breed them. I think it's better for the parents & eventually the fry.

Thanks for the replies. I've had hatchets before and don't trust them, but shrimp, I hadn't thought of using them. Of course if I do add some shrimp, my wife will still give me grief for having a fish tank without any fish.
