I know alot of aquariust that keep pacu in 4-5ft tanks cause in anything longer, they can get up enough speed to go right through the end of the tank. bala shark keepers can experiance the same problem...though not on such a large scale

BTW, asain upsidedown cats aren't synos, but are from the mystus family

i guess alot of aquarium keeping is trial and error....it doesn't look like anyone has any experiance with this kind of situation.....so i guess your gonna have to take a small risk if you want to try one of these beautiful cats. if it doesn't work out for some reason (which i highly doubt) you can more than likly find a home somewhere else for the USD (or the pacu )

yeah, not sure what I was thinking on that one.

Something like this is what I want to eventually build for them.

How quickly do those cats grow?

I would love to have an impressive bottom feeder type fish to go along with them.

LoL, the Upside Down Catfish are surface feeders, so even though it's a catfish it's not really a bottom feeder.

In a pond with Pacus you might want to go for some Leiarus pictus or other large Pim. The pond of course will have to be huge. You should be shooting around 8'x8' for the surface area.

Mine don't seem too cramped right now. I know though that it won't be long before they are. I'm working on plans for a 1700 gallon tank that should be able to house them for the rest of their lives.

They are in a 150?

We have a couple a 300 at our store (about the same size as yours), and they look really cramped. I hope you have a pond ready, as these fish get 3' long and are almost that tall as well...

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Sounds like you did get a steal! Well, I wasn't able to get back to the store to pick him up. But who knows, maybe I'll get another one some day.

My pacu are in a 150 high. Plenty of room to swim, but no explosions... I've seen their bursts of speed, it is really impressive how fast they can go!

Thanx for the advice all!

I just bought one at my LFS for 8 bucks. They had him under the regular upside down cat. So for a fish that gets so big and since I don't have to many fish now in my 60 gallon, I think it was a steal.

I reckon go for it as the Pacu would be able to swim off and also Pacu are too large to get eaten. They are the two points I was concerned on and they both seem ok.

I was in a LFS yesterday and they had what they were calling an Upside down catfish for sale. It was quite large, about 6-8 inches or more and completely black. It was the largest one I have ever seen! It had many of the normal features of a synodontis, but I've never seen one that large.

Any thoughts?

I have one that is always on the move and the other one is kinda slow, but they can be speed demons when they need to be.

Are Pacu slow moving fish coz if they are then they are not compatible, just have a look at the profile on Planet Catfish and it gives you info about tankmates on there

Bummer, I was hoping they would be compatible. I would love to have an impressive bottom feeder type fish to go along with them.

Lol, we posted at the same time. My pacu are currently 18 and 10 inches. The smaller one is growing at an impressive rate. He is living proof of how quickly they grow. He was about 2 inches when I purchased him a year ago.

I wouldn't try to keep one of them with pacu. These upside down cats are pretty much loner fish, and they are somewhat aggressive and boisterous. They will eat up any smaller fish, and they will harass and attack slow moving fish, like pacus.

Yeah, that's exactly what it looked like. Are they a solitary fish? Think it would be compatible with pacu? I don't remember, but I don't think they were charging very much for it and it was an awesome looking fish.

Did they look like [link=this?]http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/bagridae/mystus/21_4.php" style="COLOR: #808080[/link] If so, what you saw was an Asian upside down catfish. If I remember correctly, they are more aggressive than normal upside down cats, and grow to almost a foot in length.
