A beautiful pleco is the Snowball. Not nearly as costly as a Zebra. I paid about $30 for one. I also have an albino and a candystripe.

I thought all plecs needed or would benefit from driftwood, although it can be a complete pain to soak etc first.

i would go with a bristle nose as well, i made the mistake of temporarily taking on a friends common plec, its huge now and i can't find a new home for it at all. beautiful fish mind you, but you need a decent sized swimming pool to keep them really.

I have another plec in my 25 which is only supposed to get four inches long but i can't remember what its called. not much use really, so i shall go have dinner

cheers
GFG

No driftwood? Squash, celery, and other string vegetables will do just fine.

So if Clowns don't eat algae what is a good food for them?

driftwood is a *MUST* for keeping clown plecos. they will also eat squash, zuchini and if you have live plants they will clean up the rotting leaves and branches sometimes.

I have a chocolate albino plec in my 55 heavily planted and so far he's doing great with the algae and only eats the dead plant parts.

"I have a Zebra Plec. They look stunning in a tank."

...as opposed to them being outside of the tank? o.o

On another note, ottos do better in heavily planted tanks when compared with the likes of a big, bulky BN.

Why don't you get a really nice looking pleco and add a school of otos. Everyone says otos are tought to take care of but I've only lost one in about a year and a half and I have two in my sons 5 gallon tank with platys and zebras no heater for about 8 months now.

Snowball plecos really aren't good algae eaters either. Plus, there are quite a few "albino" pleco varieties.

zebras are a very nice plec, but they aren't the best algae eaters and they prefer meaty foods i would go for a good ol BN, but if you are looking for something different go for a few pitbulls

my clown plecos will browse algae off of really broad leaf plants (like my anubias), but as a rule they don't eat algae at all. although they like the rotting leaves and stems, so if you've got live plants you might consider a few. they're so small you won't even notice them just make sure you have at least one piece of driftwood for them

Bristlenose pleco, tiger peckoltia, butterfly pleco (also a peckoltia). These plecs would all work out well. They look cool (in my opinion), eat algae, and have character. Oh, and a candy-stripe pleco would work if you can find one. I've only seen them at PetSmarts.

Actually, clown plecs don't eat algae. They're cool little guys, but not what you're looking for. I agree with the other 3 that a bristle nose would be a good choice. They stay small and love algae

I suggest BN too. Specially the albino ones, they're just so cool.

If you get a male and a female, and have a cave, you'll prolly be able to get them to breed too, and they're very easy to sex.

Other options would be a clown pleco, as they don't grow large either.

Or if you REALLY wanted, a couple of pitbull plecs. They're the baby of the pleco fam.

Whichever you get, be sure they always have nice algae and vegggies.
