What type of pleco is it? There are some varieties that are carnivorous. For most omnivores then the algae tablets are good, but like all other fish a varied diet is best.

When I bought it the LFS didn't specify it as any thing other than a pleco. since joining the forum I have done some research as to it's specific type. i am left with the understanding that it is a common pleco, additionally I haven't seen it behave in any way shape or form that would give me any indication that it was carniverous.
It does seem to relish the algae waffers..

My common pleco eats a varied diet. I feed him the algae wafers, slices of zuchinni & cucumber, shrimp pellets, etc.. Again, a varied diet will probably be appreciated.

To feed the zuchinni or cucumber you can weigh it down by attaching to a rock or other heavier than water object with a rubber band or you can blanch it in boiling water for a few seconds and then it will sink. Also there are vegetable clips available that then suction to the side of you tank.

Common Pleco's can get a foot (30cm) big & so they need a much bigger tank to stay in & a good filtration, as they produce alot of waste.

Sinking Algae tablets & alot of green matter is highly appreciated by your Pleco & as stated above, Cucumber & Zucchini are very good for him.

My pleco is probably around 9" - 10" in total length at this point and is currently in a 55 gallon tank. I would guess he is probably around 5 years old. Probably needs to go to the 75 gallon, but that houses my very mean Tilapia buttekoferi, who would no doubt kill him.

Honestly, if I had someone I could trust to house him properly I would gladly depart with him - a huge waste producer and was a fish I rescued from a someone elses very small 15 gallon tank quite a while back and really doesn't fit into my plans.

is there a common length per year factor that a common pleco grows? i have one that i understand was about 6 months old i got him 9-10 months ago... anywho.. he's about 4-5 inches. i know they get huge, but how fast? he is currently housed in my 55 gallon, eventually i'll find him a new home.

::edit:: sorry to jack your post BTW!!!!
