Does anyone have any exp with these guys? I just got one last night.

It was an impulse buy, but I had sense enough to call Jamie and have her look them up here before deciding to buy him.

If I recall correctly, they should be fine in your tank, though they don't really like abundant plantage. Most grow to at least 8", and prefer supplied vegetbales to algae.

I have one shannen

I just feed bloodworm and algae wafers (wafers are occasionally) and they should eat algae as well. They need good water and non-aggresive tank mates. There are various catfish called Whip Tails and you should check out Planet Catfish for Twig Catfish and Sturisma (or something like that) to see what excact species you have

I was partly beaten to it, but I have to ask: which Whiptail?

There are five Genera of Loricariids that can be called 'Whiptails', with over 25 species to choose from!

Among the ones listed in my Kobayagaawa book (be advised , taxonomy may be out of date with some species) are:

Rineloricaria microlepidogaster
R. fallax
R. lanceolata
R. morrowi
(This one is VERY unusual - VERY spiny!)
Pseudohemiodon laticeps
(Almost a Loricariid flatfish, this one!)
Spatuloricaria caquetae
Hemiodontichthys acipenserinus
Lamonthichthys filamentosus
(VERY expensive!)
Sturisoma aureum
S. panamense
S. barbatum
Farlowella gracilis
F. acus

Two from other library sources to check out include

Loricaria filamentosa
Rineloricaria castroi

These are just the ones I know of. There are almost certainly more!

hmmmm planet catfish wasn't much help.

It's a toss between this one link
Or this one linkcommon</a>

I'm pretty sure it's the common, but as you can see they have no data on it yet.

Mine is more of a dark gray with the black bands. It's hard as hell to find him when he is sitting on the eco-complete.

There are only several commonly available whiptails; usually it's a toss up between hemi fallax and loricaria semilima (spelling?). Off of the top of my head I can only name these two; most are considerably rarer, especially the lizard whips (rineloricaria sp. and psuedohimes).

The links just go to the Planet Catfish home page. If you want to show a species of cat on Planet Catfish you gotta right click on there name and then "open in new window" and it should do the excact adress to the species you think

I'm about 75% sure that's hemiloricaria fallax. I own a good few myself--they're great fish.

As an aside, I cannot help but ask, was that photo taken using a night vision system? Only it's all green! Looks like it was shot using the FLIR camera from an Apache attack helicopter!

LOL Calil.

No it is a combination of things. Crappy camera, going thru a lot of water, that has tannins in it.

I also think the green is from the plants and lights. It only looks like that in pictures.

I think it also looks like that because the fish is sitting on top of a rock...

Edit: Here is another pic...it looks funny also because I have to lighten up the pic so you can see the fishy...
