What size tank is neccessary for these guys. I've been loking around on the net & there's not much on them other than photos. I wanted to put one in a 20long, but not sure. Also, how good are they @ eating algae, really doesen't matter as I'm not worried bout the algae, but i was just wondering If they were good @ it.

Rineloricaria fallax. Not certain but his would be my guess. I don't know much about scientific names, I'm just an average Joe when it comes to that department.

You're in luck, as I'm raising a couple in my 75. I've heard they grow fairly large-up to 10", as with most hemis. However, mine are still quite small, and preer algae wafers/cucumber over the brown stuff crawling over my tanks.

10"? that be too big for a 20 even if it is long. Dang, anyway do u know if they are good algae eaters? I can always put him in the 55 i have when he gets a lil bigger. Right now he is only like an 1"1/2 & I think I'll leave in the 20 for a couple of months.

Yeah, twenty gallons is a little too small for these fish, even though they are skinny. I'd recommend at least a twenty-nine gallon for long-term keeping, and your fifty-five will be fine.

I've heard that they are pretty good algae eaters, though they aren't up there with the bristlenose pleco or ottos. However, they do tend to keep algae in check.
If I'm not mistaken, these fish are pretty lazy, and don't move around a whole lot. This may well be the reason why they aren't as good an algae eater as they could be.

Whiptails ... ah, this covers a multitude of sins, as it were. Farlowella, Rineloricaria, Sturisoma, Lamontichthys, Loricaria are just five of the Genera I've seen associated with this common name. You're looking at something like 25 species from these Genera to sort out. Time to fire up planetcatfish.com and go hunting in the Loricariidae section!
