Smallest I've kept is Corydoras pygmaeus. Which at the time mystified me because it didn't seem to do well in my aquarium. However I suspect it would do better now because I've since learned about gravel vacs. Which are apparently fairly important for the well being of this fish. As for Red Tailed Catfishes, biggest I ever encountered was at Liverpool Museum before they had the refit (I think they've since donated it to the Blue Planet Aquarium where I think it lives with their giant Arapaima) - that was a monster. Forget what Planet Catfish says about it "only" reaching 44 inches - this one was easily five feet long. Since then, one of the Practical Fishkeeping writers has been to the Amazon, and encountered a specimen that would, if it hadn't been decapitated for the fish market, been a six foot long catfish. So dear old Phractocephalus hemiolopterus isn't so much a tank buster as a pond buster. The size of pond you'd need for this fish is enormous - try 12 feet square by 4 feet deep. Even that would cramp the style of a really big specimen. An aquarium for this fish is a civil engineering project - after all, we're talking here about a fish that's as big as a Rottweiler dog! |

LOL I probably have some of the smallest Loricarids I have an L-316 Rio Jari pleco that is around 2.5 inches and I have a Queen Arabesque pleco that is probably 3-4 inches. tee hee. The biggest I've ever had was my common pleco. He was around 6-7 inches by the time I took him to the fish store. "Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder." |

sham Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3369 Kudos: 2782 Votes: 98 Registered: 21-Apr-2004 | Largest I had was my olive royal who reached at least 10" before the external temperature dial to the heater got bumped up past 85F and he didn't survive. Smallest were the otos which spawned for me a few times but over the past year they slowly dissapeared for reasons unknown. Most of them probably just died of old age. Currently I have several clown plecos(3-4" ) and a 6" bn. |
