I'd had some new live bearing frys, i've seperated them into another tank and they seem to be doing ok as of yet. The tanks been getting grotty pretty quickly, and was wondering if putting a Plec in there would be ok?

It should be okay. Plecs are not exactly predatory.

The tank might be cleaner without the plec. The plec will produce a lot of waste, and will require a good amount of its own food. If you have leftover food the plec isn't going to help out too much with that. If you're getting algae it's nature's way of balancing out the extra food you're feeding to your fry as the algae absorbs the excess nutrients.
